It all started at the turn of the 20th century in Denver, Colorado, when a man named Lee Scott developed an amber-colored wood care product he described as “liquid gold.” Like many products at that time, Liquid Gold was sold door-to-door. Rose Hartman was a sales representative who frequently sold Liquid Gold to local widow and single mother, Ida Goldstein. As business changed during the first half of the 20th century, the formula for Liquid Gold became available for sale and Rose approached Ida to see if she had any interest in buying the formula. In 1951, Ida Goldstein purchased the formula for Scott’s Liquid Gold for $350 as a business opportunity for her three young adult sons. The young men began mixing and bottling the amber oil by hand in the family garage in Denver, Colorado. So was born the brand that eventually found its place into households across America.
Jerome (Jerry to most) Goldstein, Ida’s oldest son, took on the leadership role of Scott’s Liquid Gold, guiding the growth and future development of the company for the next 42 years. Jerry took Scott’s Liquid Gold, Inc. from its humble beginnings in a garage to a well-known and highly respected American made brand. He remained active as Chairman of the Board until his death in 2000.
Jerry’s son, Mark, joined the company in 1978 where he worked side-by-side with his dad for the next 22 years. In 1993, Mark was named President and CEO and he still leads the company today. With innovative ideas and products, Mark has helped Scott’s Liquid Gold to continue to be a dynamic, forward-thinking company.
For 65 years, Scott’s Liquid Gold products have been widely available in grocery, discount and hardware stores. Manufacturing at the same location in Denver, Colorado since 1970, the company is proud of its anchored roots in American manufacturing.
Liquid Gold manufactures and markets a variety of quality household products. The namesake Scott’s Liquid Gold Wood Care restores, preserves and protects all types of natural wood. The company’s newest product, Floor Restore, rejuvenates and protects hardwood floors. Other Scott’s Liquid Gold products include Dust ‘n Go, disposable dusting/polishing cloths; Wood Wash, wood surface cleaner and Touch of Scent, concentrated dry-mist formula air fresheners.
In the early 1990s, Jerry was approached with a new opportunity. A dermatologist and his wife presented the idea for developing a line of skin care products featuring alpha hydroxy acids. Although new to the skin care product category, Jerry, Mark and the team at Scott’s Liquid Gold combined their entrepreneurial spirit with their passion for creating innovative products to take on this new and exciting challenge and launched the highly successful Alpha Hydrox™ and Neoteric Diabetic skin care lines.
